Western Michigan University won top honors in a national awards program for educational institutions that recognizes exemplary efforts in green cleaning practices, according to an article on the WMU news website.

WMU was already recognized for sustainability in its building custodial practices when it earned Green Seal certification. The university is one of five higher education institutions in the country and the only one in Michigan to be certified.

The University's building custodial and support services unit has been working since 2004 to adopt greener practices. In 2015, WMU became the nation's fourth higher education institution to be Green Seal certified for its commercial and institutional cleaning services, the article said.

"Green Seal certification took a full year of effort because of the stringent requirements," Steven Gilsdorf, WMU director of custodial services, said in the article.

Certification goes beyond choosing safer cleaning chemicals. It includes custodians' processes and focuses on how to improve the indoor environment by removing items that could cause harm, Gilsdorf said.

WMU incorporates HEPA filtration for vacuums, reduces chemical usage, reduces decibel levels for all equipment and increases the use of recycled materials.
