How to Keep Your House Clean With KidsBy Ellen Ciurczak, eHow Contributor

Parents know that kids create clutter and it's enough to drive neat parents crazy. Getting organized and assigning responsibility for messes will allow a family to enjoy a relatively clean house and teach kids some fine life lessons.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard box
  • Plastic bins

    • 1

Identify important possessions. The first step to de-cluttering is to figure out which toys and possessions are the most important to your kids. Then get rid of the rest.

    • 2

Do a massive purge. Start in your kids' rooms, preferably when they are not there. Go through drawer by drawer and box by box. Take out all the cheap stuff and the toys they no longer play with. Put this stuff in a box for a charity. When you're done, don't try to fill up the empty space you've created. When the kids come back, tell them you are giving the toys to children that don't have any. If they resist, let them pick one toy out of the donation box.

    • 3

Contain the kid clutter. Set up a place for the kids to play and try to keep them contained to this space. This leaves the living room and grown-up areas free of toys and other kid messes.

    • 4

Purchase bins for each child. Put their name on a bin and let them throw their stuff in the bin after they come home from school or play. This will help keep their stuff in one place instead of all over the kitchen counters or spread around the living room.

    • 5

Teach your children to clean up after themselves. Start with this at an early age, around two years old. Set an example, by letting your kids know when you are picking up, then start kids with small jobs, perhaps picking up one or two toys. Show children how you want them to clean up, then watch them do it. Incorporate clean-up into their daily activities whenever it is suitable.

    • 6

Reduce the amount of stuff you buy for your kids. Buy a few quality items that cost more and fewer junky plastic items that gets strewn all about the house.

    • 7

Have a 30-minute clean-up on the weekend. Have all the kids pitch in with the adults for half an hour to pick up the house. With everyone working together, the house can be clutter free in no time.

    • 8

Do regular purgings. Every two months, go through your kids' stuff again and get rid of the toys they no longer play with and give the toys to charity. This will help keep the clutter down in their rooms and in your house.
