How to Make Window Cleaning SolutionBy Sharon Sweeny, eHow Contributor

Many cleaning products can be made very inexpensively at home using common household ingredients. If you're washing your windows, try using one of these recipes for window cleaning solutions. They each cost a fraction of what the fancy brand-name cleansers cost and are more environmentally friendly.

Things You'll Need

  • Sudsy ammonia
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Dish soap
  • Vinegar
  • Borax

    • 1

For very dirty windows: Mix ½ cup sudsy ammonia, 2 cups rubbing alcohol, ½ teaspoon dish soap, and one gallon water.

    • 2

For lightly soiled windows: Mix ¼ cup vinegar and one gallon warm water.

    • 3

For a good all-purpose window cleaner, mix 5 tablespoons of borax and ½ gallon water.

Tips & Warnings

  •

To reduce streaks, wash windows on a cloudy day and use old newspapers or coffee filters. Sudsy ammonia is regular ammonia with detergent added. You can also use these cleaners with a window squeegee, like the kind they have at gas stations for washing your car windows.

  •

Do not combine products containing chlorine bleach with ammonia; toxic fumes result that could cause permanent lung damage.
